A weekly recap of the completely useless news

The contributors of When Falls the Coliseum are an intelligent bunch, providing us with thought-provoking posts on a regular basis, covering politics, sports, parenting and book reviews, among other topics. Therefore, it is my duty to ensure that the useless, mindless discussions stay alive amidst all of this intellect. Because if the stay-at-home moms of the world, such as myself, won’t keep the stupidity alive, then who will? [Read more →]

Lauren likes TV: Tap… tap… tap…

So You Think You Can Dance (Tuesday, 8PM, FOX)I was definitely not ready for another season of SYTYCD. The hours you have to put in to this reality dance competition makes it the perfect summer series, so having it on in the fall made me feel anxious and overwhelmed. With the abundance of fall television, I knew I wasn’t tuning in until at least Vegas week. I never even made it to Vegas which put me at a distinct disadvantage… I knew no one in the top 20. I thought for sure that this season was not in the cards for me… and then they did something brilliant. [Read more →]

Saying goodbye to a sitcom

I think 30 Rock is the funniest show on TV. At least, I did until this season. I was disappointed with the premiere and found each new episode worse than the previous one, to the point last week I was fastforwarding through the second chunk of commercials and I thought, “You know, I really don’t care what nutty adventures Jack and Liz have visiting Kenneth’s hometown” and switched over to The Office. This leads to the question: how much patience do you show a show before it’s time to move on?

Lauren likes TV: What song was that?

I am so far behind on TV it’s not even funny. Between my vacation (holla to my fellow PV Zoo Party-goers), the baseball playoffs, and my day job, I’m a good 2 weeks behind. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I desperately need some rerun weeks in order for me to catch up. So that being said, this week I can’t tell you highlights, lowlights, and what to watch next week (except for Yankee baseball, of course). So what do I talk about today? [Read more →]

The mystery of David Letterman

David Letterman has been much in the news lately due to his fondness for the flesh of young female staffers, and the alleged blackmail plot regarding his exploits in that direction. It seems that old Dave is a bit of a lech who- like many powerful and wealthy individuals– uses his high social status to gain access to the sexual organs of women who would not look at him twice were he not so illustrious a figure. Lauren likes TV: Mr. and Mrs. Halpert

The Office (Thursday, 9PM, ABC) — My husband told me to get a life last night after I yelled at him for interrupting the finale scene of The Office wedding (he has a knack for doing that… flashback to Grey’s Anatomy season 2 finale, when Izzie killed Denny, Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” was playing and all he could say over and over again was, “She quit? Wait, she quit? Honey, did she quit?” I almost left him on the spot). And he deserved to be yelled at again. We all anticipated Jim and Pam’s wedding, and quite frankly my expectations were low, but the hour-long extravaganza was one of the best episodes written in a long time. To watch the events unfold leading up to the ceremony was brilliant… we’ve seen enough wedding reception mishaps. Here were the highlights for me, and every character contributed: [Read more →]

Lauren likes TV: ABC gets their funny on

Modern Family & Cougar Town (Wednesday, ABC, 9-10PM) — Sorry I left you hangin’ last week. Life happens. But I’m back this week and I made sure I watched ABC’s new comedies, Modern Family and Cougar Town… again. ABC, typically known for awesomely dramatic hourly sagas, has gotten funny. [Read more →]

America’s Best Idea

Ken Burns’ “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” premiered yesterday on PBS, delivering with his typically deliberate pacing, a moving portrait of how and why some of the most beautiful places in America, and on the planet, came under the protection of the U.S. government. [Read more →]

Fan Boy Says: Philly is Sunny again

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia came back on the air last week, and thank goodness. My world goes out of focus without a collection of insane people running around Philly doing insane things. Not only was the premiere amazing, but I also saw the stage performance of The Night Man Cometh (a rock opera based directly on an episode from last year). The humor of this show is incredibly dark. They are all horrible human beings doing terrible things. They find babies in a dumpster, mentally and emotionally abuse each other, and take advantage of people. Watch it! Love it! SUNNY!

Thursday nights on FX. It’s usually On Demand too.

Enough with family secrets

I watch a lot of talk shows, including the Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah covers a lot of ground on her show: health with Dr. Oz, finances with Suze Orman, fitness with Bob Greene, interior decorating with Nate Berkus. She’s even covered those unusual topics like “compulsive hoarding”. I thought the hoarding shows were kind of unsettling. Yesterday, however, the Oprah show reached a new level of disturbing. Lauren likes TV: Chelsea saw Jennifer ‘Lately’

Chelsea Lately (Weeknights, 11PM, E!) — I don’t know how she did it, but my “I’d-disregard-all-of-my-other-friends-forever-to-actually-be-her-friend” friend Jennifer Aniston appeared on my other “I’d-disregard-my-friend-Jackie-forever-to-actually-be-her-friend” friend Chelsea Handler’s late night show, Chelsea Lately. This meeting of female greatness was the best thing to happen to me since the remote control was invented… and was quite a feat for Chelsea. [Read more →]

Dear Jon Stewart, your younger brother traumatized me…

Dear Jon Stewart:

This letter is more a written confession than typical correspondence for I have done you wrong. I have questioned your supreme leadership of Comedy Central news satire.

Let me explain. [Read more →]

Lauren likes TV: Get up on this!

Glee (Wednesday, FOX, 9PM) — Since the pilot in the spring, Glee has been on my mind. This was the show I couldn’t wait for this fall and it was certainly worth the wait. We were left with the New Directions version of ‘Don’t Stop Believin” in our heads all summer and I was ready for a change. During a commercial break Rosanna Scotto (FOX 5 NY news anchor) mentioned an interview with Salt-N-Pepa following that nights episode of Glee. [Read more →]

Lauren likes TV: Can you feel it?

I can feel it. Pro, college, and fantasy football is alive, the stench of the smoldering New York City streets is fading, and teachers have to actually go to work like the rest of us (suckas). That’s right, fall is just ’round the corner and you know what comes with that… fall TV, THE highlight of my favorite season.  We did it. We made it through another summer of ridiculous reality television and feelings of obligation to do something after work because it’s “summer.” I, for one, am done with all of that and am ready to plop my ass in front of the television, order a pizza and wait for all the television goodness to grace us with its presence. Here’s what’s on my schedule for week 1 of the TV season: [Read more →]

Lauren Likes TV: Melrose Place bites off… Melrose Place

When I first heard about the new Melrose Place… wait, let me rewind back a year. When I first heard about the new 90210 last year, I partly rolled my eyes and partly got very excited. Finding out that The CW was recreating the best show ever wasn’t the best news ever, but then I thought about the potential of a new OC-ish show entering my life with the possibility of cameos from the 90’s original cast and I began to change my mind. Excitement grew… and then the show started. [Read more →]

Lauren likes TV: Deuces for Chima

Chima is a big, f*ckin’ brat. How many people would kill to be on Big Brother? I’m pretty sure I would. Jeff used his wizard power and overturned Chima’s HOH nominations so she decided to act like a spoiled, bratty sore loser and break all of the Big Bro rules. Awww, your power was taken away, boo hoo. And can we discuss how she looks exactly like a Bratz doll? [Read more →]

Murder in the name of ratings

So Brazilian politician and TV host Wallace Souza is suspected of having people murdered so his crime program, Canal Livre, could be first on the scene. All in the name of ratings. (Also in the name of eliminating the competition. Allegedly, Souza is a drug trafficker and the deceased were his competitors. But let’s focus on murder in the name of ratings.)

To quote “elpookie”: “Brilliant!” (The punctuation is elpookie’s.) [Read more →]

Lauren likes TV: I know, I’m slackin’…

I’ve received a few messages about my lack of posts this summer and all I have to say is… I’m sorry! I’ve been summer busy and with the lack of scripted television and abundance of reality television, if you don’t watch the episode and write about it the night it airs, you fall behind. I was able to keep up with The Bachelorette because let’s be honest, it aired on Monday and I’m not that much fun. But I certainly have not been keeping close tabs on summer favorites such as Big Brother and So You Think You Can Dance. It doesn’t mean I’m not watching… so here’s what got me excited over the past few weeks: [Read more →]
