Lauren likes TV: ABC gets their funny on

Modern Family & Cougar Town (Wednesday, ABC, 9-10PM) — Sorry I left you hangin’ last week. Life happens. But I’m back this week and I made sure I watched ABC’s new comedies, Modern Family and Cougar Town… again. ABC, typically known for awesomely dramatic hourly sagas, has gotten funny. Modern Family, starring pretty much nobody, except for Ed O’Neill, better known as Al Bundy, had me laughing for the entire first episode. The show is about 3 different families who all end up being related, which you learn at the end of the first episode, and each is funnier than the next. Who are my favorite characters you ask?  All of them. It’s a great half hour of television… hysterically funny one-liners and endearing to boot. I have a strong feeling I’ll be quoting this show and often. Then… Courteney Cox re-entered my life and I could kill her for leaving me to begin with. I had high expectations for Cougar Town and they were met. The first episode was great and the second episode was better. And it really doesn’t hurt at all that Javier from Felicity is in the show too… sans accent, but still. The montage of Jules’ night out on the town, narrated by Beyonce, was classic. Jules isn’t totally unlike Monica Geller and guess who’s fine with that? Me. I have a strong feeling I’ll be quoting this show and often. Cougar Town is my favorite new show of the season and it’s so nice to have Courteney back in my living room… it’s like Dirt never happened.

Others Noteworthy

GleeKristin Chenoweth usually annoys me but she was brilliant as boozy, high-school dropout, April Rhodes. Her rendition of “Alone” by Heart was the second favorite moment of my friend Matt’s life… runner-up to Carrie Underwood’s rendition of “Alone” by Heart in season 4 of American Idol. Visit iTunes to download Kristin’s performance and other Glee showtunes.

Private Practice — A pretty acceptable conclusion to that terrifying finale of last season’s baby-knap, straight from Violet’s uterus. Now, we need to know who’s the baby-daddy.

After the crowd egged her on, Lisa Kudrow reprised a short version of Smelly Cat at a charity event. Any chance this could spark a Friends reunion? One can only dream.

Lowlights

The Ashton Kutcher-produced, Mischa Barton-starring, The Beautiful Life, was already cancelled by The CW.

The CW’s, Vampire Diaries, has decent ratings and isn’t going to be cancelled anytime soon. Looks like we’re stuck with another vampire sensation ready to suck the bloody life out of us.

What to Watch, Week of 10/5

So You Think You Can Dance — Las Vegas week is here and this is where I begin to tune-in.

The Office — Jim and Pam are getting married… finally! I hope it lives up to the high expectation.

Major League Baseball — Playoffs! The MLB Division Series playoffs are beginning. The Tigers and Twins duke it out on Tuesday to become the Central Division champs and that team comes to NY to play the Yankees. Game 1 is on Wednesday OR Thursday… Yanks choose.  GO BOMBERS!
