Fred's dreams

Late Night Hosts

April 7, 2009
I dream Richard Schechner organizes a performance festival to be held on the top floor of the Empire State Building. It is my privilege and pleasure to participate. Then, when the show is over, I get a phone call and Richard tells me someone wants to talk to me. I figure, he found one of my old friends who wants to surprise me. It turns out it’s David Letterman calling on the show. I explain to Dave what we’ve been doing at the festival, and I tell him about my mind reading skills. Letterman is gracious and kind.

I dream it is Christmas Eve and we are celebrating by eating Kaiser rolls covered with chocolate. There is nothing on TV and we are in a new house. When I wake up, all my relatives are fighting. When I go into the courtyard, Jay Leno is performing an elaborate card trick using cards punched out from a cereal box. I want to offer him a real deck, but I don’t have one on me.

I dream I have time before a wedding is to start, so I take a walk in a part of Center City with which I am unfamiliar. The neighborhood is idyllic, filled with curio shops and a kosher bakery. I buy a chocolate chip muffin from the orthodox baker’s attractive yet stupid daughter. Then, I run into a combination of Gail and my mother. We are befriended by Conan O’Brien, and we vow to keep in touch.

“Fred’s Dreams” appears every Wednesday.
