Olympic hopefuls, or Chicago politics goes international?

Two weeks after President Obama said he would not be lobbying the International Olympics Committee on behalf of Chicago, he has changed his mind and is flying to join his wife, a coterie of celebrities and the elite of the historically corrupt Chicago political machine in Copenhagen.

Never mind that he has met with General McChrystal only once since the General asked, in August, for help in Afghanistan; that the healthcare debate is still on the rocks; unemployment is still out of control; that Obama has been spouting “Green” propaganda every chance he gets; that both Canada and Australia have announced that hosting the Olympics ended up costing the taxpayers money (that we can’t afford) — what is obviously more important is getting Oprah in front of the committee.

President Obama will fly in Thursday, take a 24-car convoy to the IOC headquarters, make his presentation and fly home on Friday.

And what a way to go! Michelle Obama, not content to wait a single day for her husband to fly over with her, took a separate flight. Ignoring the massive cost associated with moving armored vehicles, Secret Service personnel and other support staff, we still have to look at the $1.4 million in fuel and the 1 million lbs of C02 spewed by the presidential jet on this jaunt. Multiply that by 2, since they are going separately, and you have to wonder how President Obama balances his lauded “love of the planet” against the dubious distinction of bringing home the Olympics to a city that is evenly split on even wanting to host the competition in the first place.

With all of the issues facing this country today, is this a good use of the President’s time?
