Fred's dreams

Ice Cream

May 19, 2009
I dream it is snowing and I am at work at a combination university and hotel complex. Much to our surprise, various structures around the facility start to crumble. The entire campus is livid about the arrogant and obviously incompetent architect who is responsible for these problems. There is nothing to do but go home, so I crawl over bleachers filled with people and rubble. Just near the exit I find an ice cream freezer. I ransack the freezer and give the spoils to the people.

I dream my friends and I assemble daily at a corner store run by an effusive Israeli/Puerto Rican couple. You don’t have to buy anything, but you are encouraged to hang around. In fact, they have a queen-sized bed in the middle of the store and you are supposed to take off all your clothes and nap there. I purchase two ice cream novelties, multi-layered chocolate on sticks. I unwrap one to eat it, but then notice people in front of whom I am embarrassed to eat ice cream novelties. I slip the wrapped and the unwrapped novelties into my canvas carrying bag with my books and papers. I realize I have to get out of there quickly before the ice cream melts and messes everything up. I rush into the street, take a bite out of the unwrapped one, and throw the rest of it into a trash can.

I dream I have a television clown show. It is a lousy, low budget show, and we’re not very good. Furthermore, Magician Ben Robinson is debuting with a really great magic show that is certain to upstage us. I wish Ben luck, binge on ice cream, and make out with my producer in the tall grass near my parents’ house. When I go home, my father reprimands me for not taking the clothing out of the dryer.

“Fred’s Dreams” appears every Wednesday.
