Christine O’Donnell: The left does an about face
I’ve always said that I’d trust fifty names randomly drawn from the pages of my phone book to run the country more effectively and efficiently than the idiots we typically send to DC as elected representatives. It seems as though Christine O’Donnell is giving me a chance to stand by that statement.
But more importantly, she is illustrating the hypocrisy of the left these days.
This weekend most “earth shattering headline” is that video has surfaced of Christine O’Donnell mentioning that she’d dabbled into witchcraft. From CBS News:
In the clip shown last night on Maher’s current show, Real Time, O’Donnell said:
“I dabbled into witchcraft — I never joined a coven. But I did, I did. … I dabbled into witchcraft. I hung around people who were doing these things. I’m not making this stuff up. I know what they told me they do. . . .”
“One of my first dates with a witch was on a Satanic altar, and I didn’t know it. I mean, there’s little blood there and stuff like that. … We went to a movie and then had a midnight picnic on a Satanic altar.”
Yeah… That’s a bit nuts. No lie. This is absolute proof that the surge of TEA Party activism (which I fully support) can run into some speed bumps as candidates are hyped without decent background checks. People are so anxious to get rid of the known evils, RINOs and Democrats, that they’re not sure of what they’re getting in their place.
It’s kind of like the liberals who voted for Obama simply because he “wasn’t Bush.” They wound up electing a Communist who hates America, not a reasonable, freedom-loving individual who was truly concerned about the lives of the people living here in the good ol’ US of A. The TEA Party is making the exact same mistake at the moment, but the difference is that the left-wing media is actually investigating the TEA Party candidates and their past, whereas Obama just got a “Get out of jail free” card from his thralls at MSNBC and CNN.
However, the three most important things to remember as you hear the left try to blow this story up are:
1) Her opponent is yet another open, self-proclaimed Marxist. Do we really need more Stalinists in DC? Hasn’t Obama already given power to enough of his brethren?
2) For the last two months all we’ve heard out of Obama, the Democrats, and the left-wing media has been attacks on the people who don’t want the Ground Zero mosque as being “anti-freedom of religion.”
That is not to say that religion is without controversy. Recently, attention has been focused on the construction of mosques in certain communities — particularly in New York. Now, we must all recognize and respect the sensitivities surrounding the development of lower Manhattan. The 9/11 attacks were a deeply traumatic event for our country. The pain and suffering experienced by those who lost loved ones is unimaginable. So I understand the emotions that this issue engenders. Ground Zero is, indeed, hallowed ground.
But let me be clear: as a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances. This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakeable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are. The writ of our Founders must endure.
Or you can listen to MSNBC anchors defend the freedom of religion for Muslims, then contrast that with the attacks on the Wiccan religion we’re sure to hear when Ms. O’Donnell is discussed over the next couple of weeks:
Maybe you want to read MoveOn.org’s commitment to the freedom of religion and review their petition for the Ground Zero Mosque, then compare/contrast what they’re going to say about Ms. O’Donnell’s past experiences?
And
3) We all realize that many people who profess the Christian faith have pasts which are totally at odds with their current religious views. People like Glenn Beck, who is open and honest about the life-changing power of religion in his experience. Or people like the Pope himself, a former Nazi, who certainly has seen the power of Christianity at work in his own life.
Christianity is based on the power of God to forgive and forget. To help people change their lives and recover from past mistakes. As the left goes on their witch hunt this week (pun intended), keep in mind that Christianity doesn’t guarantee perfect people.
It promises second chances.
And that’s what I’m going to give Christine O’Donnell.
