Stuff I’ve been digging — summer 2010 edition
Ok, I am going to admit, I’ve been a naughty blogger. So I want to start by apologizing for my lack of posts. But this summer I achieved a dream I never thought possible — I had every Friday off! But now, as we savor the last tasty tidbits of summer, I am back — and armed with a summer’s worth of material.
I guess I should start by saying my biggest obsession this summer was with Discovery Channel’s Dual Survival. It’s basically a hippie dude named Cody Lundin, and a military dude named Dave Canterbury. Two slightly conflicting personalities — but it works! Their chemistry is amazing, and Cody is a pretty funny guy. The odd thing is where I developed this obsession with survivor type television shows. It started with Survivorman, and now there’s a plethora of shows I enjoy — The Colony, Beyond Survival, and I will even watch Man Vs. Wild from time to time. But I’m not the outdoor type — in fact, if I were to be put in a survival situation, I would probably curl up into a ball and weep. I wouldn’t know how to eat — what animal does bacon come from again? On top of that, I lose my mind if I forget to bring my ipod to work. Being outdoors in the wilderness has as much appeal to me as seeing a double feature of Eat, Pray, Love and Step Up 3D. I have only been camping once in my life, in college, and got sick from drinking too much beer, and eating too many hot dogs and marshmellows. Believe me folks, that is a hangover you never want to have. But alas, I have been totally into these survivor shows. And sadly, as my bar hopping days are over, Dual Survival was the highlight of my Friday nights.
Another obsession of mine this summer is a place in Atlantic City called Tony Boloneys. My interest in this place was picqued when I saw they won Best Cheesesteak at contest run by Guy Fieri at the Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival. I thought to myself “what does Guy Fieri know about cheesesteaks? My arteries are lined with cheesesteaks — I’ll be the judge of this.” so I headed into AC and walked into the place. Well, the guy at the counter could tell why I was there and asked “Cheesesteak Ole’, right?” (This was the sandwich that won the contest) It consists of a 10-spice sirloin steak, fried onions, Jack cheese and homemade Chipotle ranch. I ordered to-go, because I had my two-year-old son with me, and when I got to the car, it smelled so good I had to open it. Then it looked so good I had to take a bite. Then it tasted so good I had to finish the whole sandwich right out in front of the place! I proclaimed on Facebook that night that it was the best cheesesteak I’ve ever eaten — the roll was soft as a pillow, and the flavors were perfect. So far, everyone who has gone on my recommendation has concurred. The place is that good! It’s not your typical pizza and sandwich shop that dumps everything in the fry-o-later. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!) They use fresh ingredients, and creative and interesting toppings and recipes. Bottom line — the place has totally fucked up my diet!
Now onto something I am not so happy about. MTV and its new “GYT” campaign. It is a safe sex campaign, which is essentially a good thing. But rather hypocritical for a channel that shows Jersey Shore, whose cast members by now probably possess genitals that glow in the dark and can be seen from outer space and emit a faint hissing sound. I mean, surely “The Situation” is now pickled in syphillis, right? The whole concept infuriates me because it reminds me the mid-90’s and my high school and college years where MTV had me fearing that if you breathed in deep enough around someone with AIDS, you would catch it. But at the same time, they showed Real World where everyone banged everyone with zero consequence. At age 34, I have no business watching it anymore — but cut me some slack — Beavis and Butthead was on!
