Any suggestions out there?

Earlier this week, WFTC contributor Jessica Alfreds offered this post, suggesting some great places for dining in Philly. I made some notes, planning to visit the City of Brotherly Love myself, later this month. Now, thanks to A LOT of local enthusiasm for soccer in that area, I’m asking, “can anyone recommend a good sports bar in town?”

Plans for our visit to eastern P-A had included taking in a game by the Philadelphia Union, one of the new MLS franchises. The June 27 match will have the Union hosting Seattle Sounders FC – which provided my older boy (himself a goalkeepr) to watch the Sounders’ veteran keeper, Kasey Keller, in action. The game will also serve to debut PPL Park, in Chester, America’s newest soccer venue …

… and also the fullest. There is now a waiting list for anyone wanting season tickets for the Union. And all of the remaining, individual tickets were sold-out the morning they became available … well, ALMOST all of the tickets. There ARE some ‘Field Level’ tickets available … but at $150 each?!?!

Despite what you’ve heard, or seen on television, not all Texans have oil wells in their backyards, and the cost of those remaining tickets is out of the question … though I might reconsider, if they could get Seattle’s Keller to throw one of his jerseys into the deal.

Don’t get me wrong … I’m thrilled to see the sport catching-on in a BIG way there. In addition to those attending, the game will provide a great opportunity for the team, its fan base, and the surrounding area to show their stuff nationwide, and around the world … it will be televised live on ESPN, and streamed on ESPN’s website.

Which brings me back to my original question …  “can anyone recommend a good sports bar in town?”

There's a saying around here, something like, "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could!" That's me. I'm a 'dang Yankee from back-east' who settled in the Lone Star State after some extended stays in the eastern U.S., and New Mexico. I worked as an archaeologist for a few years before dusting off my second major in English, and embarking on a 25-year career in journalism. Since then, I've embraced the dark side of the force, and now work in PR for a community college in Midland, Texas.

  1. Jeff – if you want to not only go to a sports bar but one that is big into soccer, try Fado at 15th and Locust. And if you are north of the city at any point, looking for the same thing (plus some AWESOME beer), go to the Iron Abbey on Easton Road in Horsham.

  2. Thanks, Alan! Wherever I end up, I’ll hoist one in your honor.
