The American Music Awards (Sunday, 8PM, ABC) — I am a big fan of music award shows. Grammy’s, VMA’s… hell I’ll even watch the CMA’s. Last night were the American Music Awards so obviously I watched. I didn’t get around to many shows this week so I am dedicating this week’s column to the awards show. It was clearly a night for the ladies. My commentary below:

I always love to see Janet Jackson, one of my all time fave’s, on stage especially when she sings the hits, and particularly when she sings the hits in a medley format. But Janet wasn’t really movin’ like she used to. I mean she clearly wasn’t in true performing shape (and the outfit wasn’t helping), but still… she was looking slow. My friends Amanda and Ashley can officially do Janet better than Janet. I found it amusing that Jermaine did not know the words to “Everywhere”… at all. I hope this sparks a Janet comeback… a throwback tour featuring all the hits. You can never see her too many times in concert… even if it’s just for the anticipation of those 3 words… Gimme A Beat.

I love Kelly Clarkson… have since episode one of season one of American Idol. “Already Gone” has been on a 3x/day restriction (what I assign to all of my favorite songs so I don’t get sick of them) since I first heard it. She has got some set of pipes and sounded the best, above all, last night.

As a full-blooded New Yorker, I can’t help but beam with pride when I hear “Empire State of Mind”… on the other hand, as a full-blooded New Yorker, I can’t help but cringe every time I hear this song. It far surpassed my 3x/day rule and not by choice. If you live in NY you’d know that every store, car, boom box (yep they still exist on the streets of NYC) has been blasting this for months, particularly in October. So happy the Yankees won the World Series, partly because I was hoping “ESoM” would be shelved for a bit.

I’m still wondering what the purpose of two of the four Black Eyed Peas is.

American Idol alumni Carrie Underwood proved that she’s got it. She’s also got some set of legs.

Lady Gaga is out of her fucking mind… and this performance was timid for her. But the truth is, beneath all of that bizarro disarray is a unique, freakishly talented chick. Is it me or does she resemble the original Becky from Roseanne?

After all the years of Bobby Brown, crack, and hell-to-the-no moments, Whitney Houston still looks beautiful. She sounded better last night than she did on the Good Morning America Summer Stage, but it still wasn’t Bodyguard good. However, it was really good to see her on stage again and looking so well.

Eminem is always good for a top notch performance… and in the words of Sarah Silverman, “I think it’s so cute that 50 Cent is still alive.”

Did Taylor Swift really beat out Michael Jackson for Artist of the Year? The enigma that is the popularity of Taylor Swift still blows my mind. I just don’t understand it… but it couldn’t have happened to a sweeter girl.

American Idol (I think tonight proved the caliber of artists that come out of that show… take that haters) runner-up Adam Lambert closed out the show Adam Lambert theatrical-extravaganza-style. And he hit the hiiiiiigh womanly notes while doing it. That talent is just something I can never see myself getting used to. That being said, he is one talented bitch.
