I read The Bro Code

Sometimes a book comes along at the right moment in your life and helps you through a rough patch. And this book is one of them.

Let me begin by saying this The Bro Code has no merit. It isn’t literature. It isn’t even a narrative. It’s based on a book in the TV series How I Met Your Mother. In the show a male character, Barney, a complete womanizer, quotes endless rules on how guys should act. Most of these rules are correct — in fact to guys they’re instinctual. But it’s still amusing, and so is this book.

This is essentially 200 pages of jokes about women altered to be a male response to stereotyped female behavior. AWESOME!

Even better that a girl gave it to me as a Christmas present. Normally, I would have sat her down and explained that books like this are shameless money making schemes and publishers should be ashamed and she should never ever consider buying one again, though it is acceptable to read it in the bookstore or snag one from the remaindered pile. Instead I said thank you and gave her a hug.

Months later, following a feast of Taco Bell, I was in a hurry to reach the bathroom, and this book was the only one that was readily at hand. (Note: Although I frequently read in the bathroom, I do not keep a book in the bathroom because the repeated exposure to steam from the shower deflowers its pages.) Over the next half hour I read approximately a third of the book laughing all the way.  Some of the jokes are new and some are repeats from the show, including my personal favorite, the hot/crazy scale guys should use to rate a woman.

If you watch the show and enjoy reading on the toilet you might want to get this book from the library or borrow it from a friend. If you own this book you might want to watch who you loan it to.
