Avant Garde

I dream I am watching an avant garde production of Fiddler on the Roof. The leading role of Tevye, played by an actor who resembles Santa Claus, is an out gay man who is having affairs with various characters. Furthermore, he wears a turban and no shirt, so obviously the characters are not Jewish. This production, set in the Middle East, contradicts every aspect of the original.

I dream I am to be introduced to the public as the next avant garde magician at a television taping. A lovable and perceptive dog mingles with the audience, jumps on me, and digs me completely. I walk with it and sing with it and the dog smiles like a person. I am given credit for having animal magnetism.

I dream I return to school and find that my schedule is unchanged but the syllabus has been revised. Furthermore, we receive an angry communication in which the faculty is accused of slacking off. I have agreed to help keep an eye on the program, so I observe a colleague’s class held in an outdoor stadium. The first part is an elaborate presentation in which students play dramatic roles. In the second section a French poet berates us. In the third section, an avant garde dance troupe compels me to join them in an improvised piece about which I know nothing. For my part, I dive into the moat and climb out.
