Econ Rap

Economics has long been referred to as the “dismal science” because, well, most people find it all so dry. Some creative economists over at George Mason University and elsewhere are challenging that view and having a little fun making rap videos full of economic lessons. I’ve linked the most recent installment below.

Granted, if you’re completely clueless of the arguments they’re making, a lot won’t make sense, but they’re fun to watch regardless.

Mr. Baldwin is a doctoral candidate of comparative literature and cultural studies at the University of Arkansas. He is a self-described free-market anti-capitalist harboring anarchist utopian fantasies. The best that can be said of him is that, presumably, his mother loves him.

  1. Actually, the term “dismal science” has nothing to do with economics being dull. It comes from Thomas Carlyle, an elitist who resented the economists of his day for their opposition to slavery. See http://www.econlib.org/library/Columns/LevyPeartdismal.html.

  3. While it’s true that the origin of the term is traced to Carlyle, like a lot of terms, it has come to mean something different in modern useage…the “most people” to whom I refer use the term to describe their disinterest. Your point, though, is well taken.
