Audio files: Special July 4, 2012 unstoppable summer listening guide!
A lot of big hits have been racing up the summer pop charts in recent weeks.
Unfortunately, I can’t name any of them.
So I’ve decided to create a super-great SUMMERTIME PLAYLIST of my own.
Here it is, divided into impenetrable and indecipherable themes. To paraphase something Joe Garden wrote in The Onion circa 1996, my list has all the consistency of an 8th grade mix-tape. I can’t promise that the chosen songs have anything to do with summer. They probably don’t.
Here is the playlist.
DECEPTION
- “Dreamer Deceiver,” by Judas Priest (this is epic with a capital “E.” Rob Halford emits the lonesome coyote call. Highly recommended).
- “The Traitor,” by Herbie Hancock (this song cooks with gas and you really have to experience the entirety of it).

I endorse Terry Bozzio’s modest self introduction:
I’m a drummer, I’ve played with Frank Zappa and Missing Persons, etc.
Yeah, he’s pretty unassuming. I met him at a drum clinic when I was a freshman in high school and he was almost timid in conversation. Not so on the drums though…
I saw him on tour with Fantomas. His kit blew my mind.
Oh yeah, I would’ve loved to have seen that. This kit, right?

Yeah- it took up half the stage.
I love that kit. And I love that, when so many bands are concerned with being retro and downsizing their drum kits or whatever, Terry just makes his kit a thousand times bigger than ever.
FYI, the song of the summer is “Lights” by Ellie Goulding:

Kinda can’t get that song out of my head.
Also, I think the version of “Fourth of July” that appears on Dave Alvin’s “King of California” (his best record?) is my favorite.
Yeah, I like a lot of that Dave Alvin stuff too.
