Universities are not the birth places, nor the graveyards, of culture

I got up this morning and began reading the news and opinion pages, which is usually how I start my mornings.  I was cruising through the headlines over at Instapundit.com when I saw the pitch for Dropping The A-Bomb on History, an opinion piece written by Mr. Ed Driscoll.  The purpose of the article was to describe to us how American academia  has been co-opted by a left wing political movement and how they have used that institution for their own purposes.  He concludes the piece with the following line, which was also quoted by Mr. Reynolds:

If conservatives ever want to recapture the high ground of culture, just creating an alternative news media is nowhere near sufficient. they have to — somehow — recapture academia, where culture is ultimately created. And destroyed as well.

In atypical fashion, I must disagree with Mr. Driscoll here.  The creation of culture, and it’s destruction, is too great a power to credit to such a pathetic system such as our universities, and its scope is too much for the people who run those institutions to know how to use it if they did have it.  Society is created and destroyed by none but the greatest human force on Earth:  Your Mother.

I know, some body out there is eventually going to point out that I’m a single father who is raising his child by himself, and that obviously fathers can play as great a role as moms can so I should blame “parents” instead of “mom”, but no, I refuse.  It’s precisely because I’m a single father that I’m not going to coddle the ladies like that.  My kid only sees her mom for six weeks during the summer, and talks to her once every couple of months or so, but even with that extremely limited contact, my ex’s ability to imprint ideas and behaviors on our daughter is WAY beyond mine.  I can say something for months at a time and never get any acknowledgment, whereas she says something once, and five years later my kid recalls it with perfect clarity.  It’s insane how influential your mother is.  Nature (or the gods, depending upon your belief system) has designed us to learn from them instantaneously; we absorb their thoughts without a moment’s hesitation or consideration.

This isn’t a new line of reasoning, by any means.  In fact, the idea that mothers shape the world is ancient since societies were being created and destroyed long before the first university, and people were trying to explain why many thousands of years ago.  Society itself is designed around this fact, because of real-world trial and error since it evolved over time, so there is empirical evidence of the idea.  Let’s go wwwwaaaayyyy back:

1st Samuel 15, vs. 1-3:  Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the LORD sent to anoint you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the LORD. This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”

If you want to wipe out a culture, or a society, you must let nothing live.  That’s the lesson.  Samuel starts by telling Saul to kill the men, which is Standard Operating Procedure, but then follows in with “AND the women, children, infants, and livestock.”, which wasn’t the usualy method of operation back then since they were so valuable as slaves and loot.  God was commanding that the society be absolutely removed from the face of the Earth as judgement, and the normal process of looting would allow for the re-emergence of the society later on.

Of course, Saul disobeyed and his love of plunder cost him his kingship, but the point is sufficiently illustrated, I believe.

Since my view on this issue is also greatly influenced by Mr. Robert A. Heinlein, I’ll offer up a quote from the Master:

All societies are based on rules to protect pregnant women and young children. All else is surplusage, excrescence, adornment, luxury, or folly, which can — and must — be dumped in emergency to preserve this prime function. As racial survival is the only universal morality, no other basic is possible. Attempts to formulate a “perfect society” on any foundation other than “Women and children first!” is not only witless, it is automatically genocidal. Nevertheless, starry-eyed idealists (all of them male) have tried endlessly — and no doubt will keep on trying.  — Quoted from  Time Enough For Love

Throughout all of human history, as long as only the men were killed, the society came back.  Take Israel, for instance (again).  How many times were they sacked and drug off into slavery in the Bible?  It didn’t matter when the men were all put to the sword and the women and children were sold into bondage, they always came back.  The women, though slaves, raised their children as Israelites, and eventually the society and culture came back.

That’s the real source of power: who is in charge of educating the kids.  It’s the reason Mr. Driscoll says that universities are destroying our culture, they’re the ones who have been put in charge of educating our kids.

This is not the fault of the liberals in the universities.  It’s the fault of the moms who turned over their responsibility without so much as a whimper.  The university system is only able to accomplish what it does through the continued abalienation of their historical duty by the mothers of our country, and it’s ultimately not what the universities are doing as much as it what many American moms are not doing.

Examine, for instance, the story which left conservatives across the country incredulous at the start of the week:  The “homeless” woman with fifteen kids whining “Somebody owes me!  Somebody is going to have to pay for all my kids!” down in Florida.  As you watched that video clip, could you imagine those children who were jammed into that hotel room learning how to be productive citizens from that woman?  Of course not!  All she’s teaching them is to blame others for their life, and to demand help, ideas which, while 100% Marxist in nature, this welfare queen obviously didn’t learn at any of our Communist universities since she doesn’t look or sound like she finished third grade.

But there is hope.

Take a look at pictures of a TEA Party rally.  All those little blue and white haired ladies are moms.  They’re moms with exceptional reach, since they’re moms to more moms, and possibly even another generation past that.  These little old ladies are, and always have been the strength of the TEA Party, as I’ve noted before here and here.  They’re active, standing up for what they believe and the preservation of American culture, and teaching their kids, whether the kids are their 40 year old kids or their 15 year old grandkids, about what is wrong with the liberal dreams for America.  While Michelle Obama famously stated “Barack knows that we are going to have to make sacrifices; we are going to have to change our conversation; we’re going to have to change our traditions, our history; we’re going to have to move into a different place as a nation.”, these moms beg to differ with her.

They’re the reason his popularity has dropped off the face of the planet.  Just like Oprah, whom they used to support before she endorsed him.  Where mom goes, the rest of us follow.  Notice any moms at an #OWS protest?  Nope.  That’s why they are falling apart.  The youth may have put Obama in office, but little, old, white haired grandmas are taking him out.

You can’t argue with momma!
