Audio files: Deadly (tender? steady?) wolves ’round the town tonight

One of my favorite songs of the past decade or so is “Star Witness” by Neko Case.

And you know what one of the most overlooked qualities of this great, amazing song is?

The drums.

John Convertino from Calexico bring its. Nothing showy but he’s got the right touch — warm, understated cymbals. Deft use of bundle sticks, a tasteful command of the kick drum. The works!

And speaking of Calexico, Seattle blogger/friend Jackie Baisa recommends this ditty.

Jackie, incidentally, attended high school with the great Alice in Chains drummer Sean Kinney. If you’ve never heard the Alice in Chains hit “Them Bones,” give it a try (“Ahh,” cries lead singer Layne Staley at the beginning of the tune. “Ahh,” cries Layne again.  ”Ahh,” cries Layne one more time. “Ahh,” cries Layne a fourth and final time).

And if you’ve never heard the Richard Cheese version of Alice in Chains’ “Man in the Box,” then I implore you to sample that as well.

In other news, this gentleman — by sheer twist of fate — was my cabbie a couple weeks ago:

  1. I do appreciate that Richard Cheese keeps most of his songs at 2 minutes or less. He’s pretty entertaining at that length.

“Star Witness” and “Crystal Frontier” are both terrific songs.

  2. “Me So Horny” by Richard is also transcendent…
