Yes, madam homeland security secretary, the system worked — for al-Qaeda

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has been justifiably criticized for her odd statement that “the system worked” in the case of a would-be terrorist on several watch lists who boarded a U.S. commercial with explosives in his underwear.

He would have killed everyone on board the plane had he been a bit smarter and had not his fellow passengers subdued him. Unlike Napolitaneo, I don’t think our airline security should rest with the idea that a terrorist will screw up and the other passengers will kick his butt.

I agree with Michael Daly from the New York Daily News, who wrote in his column that Obama should fire Napolitano and put a real cop in charge of homeland security.

He mentions several names, including John Timoney. Timoney was the deputy police commissioner of New York City and he later served as the police commissioner of Philadelphia and Miami. I met Timoney several times when he was the Philadelphia police chief.

I covered the street riots during the Republican Convention in Philadelphia and I saw Timoney out on the street commanding the police while riding his mountain bike. He even mixed it up with a couple of violent protesters. Timoney did a fine job of organizing the police and containing the violence. It was Philly’s loss when he left the job.

Obama should fire Napolitano and hire John Timoney or another cop like him. Cops understand the threats to our security and a former police chief would do a much better job of maintaining our security and safety.
