My 2009 in blogging
People sometimes ask me, “Scott, what is this blog you’re always blogging about?” Sometimes, confused, they add, ”Blog.”
I try to tell them about When Falls the Coliseum, about our more than 60 writers, about our regular columns and reviews, that since Thanksgiving more than a dozen new voices have joined us, that we actually have readers and lots of fun things to read here, that they should give us a visit and tell their friends. But all some of them hear is “blog.” Everyone’s got one of those.
I’ve done some blogging in 2009 and have been fortunate enough to have my posts linked by cnn.com, reason.com, instapundit.com, amspec.org, and other places. That’s translated into actual readers who don’t know me personally, which not every blog has. So there.
Since 2010 is almost here, it’s year-in-review time. Early in the year I said “I like Vista.” I’ve now had it longer and I like it less (though I clarified that in the comments to that post), but it still isn’t a big deal to me. Other than that, I don’t have any corrections or retractions to make to my 2009 posts (but I didn’t re-read them, only looked at the titles).
This year, I posted opinion pieces, personal essays, reviews, links to things that amused me, commentary on the news, people who should be killed this week, pieces about language, and other stuff I’m too tired to categorize. I’m pleased to see that not all of it was political.

I love writing for WFTC. Thanks for getting me involved and for always encouraging me to write and stick with a weekly post. It’s probably one of the best things anyone has done for me in 2009. I am at my best when I write. Even if it’s bad writing, or people hate it. I feel great doing it. Thank you for that. I should probably thank Amy too because she introduced me to the site, but fuck her, I’m only going to thank you. Consigliere, my ass. I want a title dammit. But I digress.
Despite our many differences, I always enjoy your blogs and your point of view. Your caustic wit and sense of humor are refreshing. You manage to write with conviction while always working in something that makes me laugh.
You’ve done an awesome job with When Falls and I look forward to the new writers and all the good things 2010 has in store for us… like a Going Parental icon and a title for me.
Happy New Year!
Reading some of the titles of your blogs, I realize I am missing something. But then again, I haven’t read Mean Martin Manning yet, so I am way behind. Anyhow, keep up the good work. As long as you read all of my blogs, and get either agitated, amused, or confused. That’s all I ask for.
Consigliere? Jaclyn, perhaps Scott will make you a capo. As for me, I’m just a lowly soldier.
WFTC is getting better by the day. I am spending more and more time staring at this damn computer, reading everything by the growing list of contributors!
“That’s translated into actual readers who don’t know me personally, which not every blog has.”
That’s interesting. No one I know reads anything I write. They all get a belly full of hearing me say it in person, I guess.
