The (alleged) cat killer’s motive

I don’t know if Tyler Weinman is guilty of mutilating cats and terrorizing pet owners in South Florida. I am even more allergic to cats than I am to Brendan Fraser (at least, they make me sneeze more), but whatever you think of cats or any animal or animal rights, obviously it’s wrong to mutilate someone else’s pet and leave it for them to find. It violates their property rights. Plus, it seems like a mean thing to do to the cat and the owner. Also, we might expect that the violence could escalate beyond cats. Everyone knows that serial killers start with animals. But Tyler’s father tells us his son is innocent, a good boy:

The elder Weinman acknowledged there was a divorce, but said his son dealt with it and truly loves animals. He said the boy’s stepmother owns nine cats.

Investigators, who said more arrests are possible, say they have a suspected motive. But they have declined to release details.

A motive? The parents are divorced. The stepmother who took his mother’s place owns nine cats… it’s a Disney movie gone horribly awry, complete with a wicked stepmother, but instead of the neighborhood pets transforming into a team of glorious horses to pull the carriage to the ball, the would-be prince guts them and leaves them on porches all over the village.
