Bad sports, good sports: hot dogs and pizza or fish and chips?

I try to be as worldly as I can be. Not sure I hit the mark very often, but I try to notice my provincial tendencies so that I can avoid sounding like a rube. That said, there are some things that should just remain American. This week, I read that the NFL has had discussions about holding the Super Bowl in London sometime in the next five to ten years. What a ridiculously bad idea. Sure, I understand why the NFL, and other sports leagues in this country, are looking to the global market in order to encourage interest (read:  money) beyond our borders. The Super Bowl, though, is the single biggest sporting event of the year. Fans of the participating teams are already hard pressed to find a way to get to the game.  Travel costs are outrageous for something like that, not to mention tickets. Add in international travel, though, and it becomes an impossibility for all but the very wealthy.

At what point do we hold it against the league?  I love football. As much as I love so many sports, football is the clear leader for my affections. The NFL has an amazing product, and they have created a true monster, as far as a money-making machine that has no apparent limits. I guess they think they are limited, though, and they are aiming to expand to an even wider audience. What better way to appeal to those audiences than to take the biggest game right to their doorsteps. I have a problem with taking even a regular-season game overseas. The Super Bowl?  That should just be off limits. Let’s at least pretend that the average fan could see his or her team win the championship in person someday.

Bad sports, continued:

2) Wow. I know the Washington Nationals are a pretty crummy franchise. So were the Expos before them. You’d think, though, that they would at least make sure to spell the franchise name correctly on the jerseys.

3) In the spirit of messed up uniforms, Darren O’Day did a good impersonation of someone else in his Texas Rangers debut.

Good sports:

1)  I am only going to highlight one good story this week, but it is a good one.  New NFL rookie Michael Oher has a very inspiring story, from homeless to newly drafted offensive tackle.

  1. That story about the Natinals is funny. How do you miss that error?

  2. Yep. Then again, a better might be how do you put that awful team on the field?
