Obama family will choose a rescue dog as first pet

I am so pleased that the first family is choosing to rescue a pet rather than paying a high price for a pure bred dog from a breeder. There is one very lucky Portuguese Water Dog out there and so many other animals in desperate need of a home. I have learned a lot from my friend Beth Bates who runs a site called GoodDogz.org.

Dogs are surrendered for all sorts of reasons. Maybe their owner can’t physically take care of them anymore or maybe they have been taken from abusive homes or puppy mills. The most heartbreaking abandonment, which is happening more and more frequently, are owners who leave behind their pets because of home foreclosures. If you can’t feed your family and pay your mortgage, it’s hard to justify the expense of a pet.

I am proud of the example the Obamas are setting and I hope this helps lead the charge in a wave of adoptions. When my kids get a little older and we are in the market for a new dog (because really, the dog will complete the family) I will definitely get my pet from a shelter.

  1. Heartwarming, yes, and it is what my family is planning to do if we can move into a bigger house. May I be the first to suggest they name the dog “TARP”? The rescue/bailout connection is too good to ignore.

  2. wow – that is really surprising. I was all about the Labradoodle – guess I just lost $20. I had to do a little more research on why they picked the PWD, and found an OK description of it: http://obamadogadoption.com/Dog_breeds/portuguese-water-dog.html. It seems like a good choice the more I think about it, wish I had my $20 back though.

  3. The Portuguese Water Dog makes wonderful pets, and their curly hairs are so handsome. A good choice for the Obama family, now some questions remain: male or female, how will they call it?

  4. “6-month-old Portuguese water dog from the same prominent kennel in Texas where Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) got his dogs.” – Washington Post

Rescue dog. Right. The Obamas pandering to the animal rights crowd seems similar to their pandering to the various religious constituencies: Obama believes in nothing and can therefore readily pander to everyone.

  5. I don’t agree that he “believes in nothing” however I am very disappointed they didn’t rescue a dog that needed rescuing. I have no mushy feelings toward the whole doggy legacy thing — Kennedy or not.
