A joke

Page 15 of the February 2009 issue of Highlights, the magazine for children, has the following joke, submitted by a Lucy Burton of Indiana:

Two muffins are sitting in an oven.

Muffin 1: Does it feel warm in here to you?

Muffin 2: AAH! A talking muffin!

My son tells the joke with just the right inflection. It’s a great joke, don’t you think?

  1. This is my 12-year-old daughter’s favorite joke of all time. She’s told it, oh, maybe 1,768 times over the past few years.

You’re right — it’s all in the inflection. The “aah, a talking muffin” line has to be said in a surfer/skater dude voice for the joke to be maximally effective.

And she points out that the line works better if it’s “whoooa,” not “aah.”

We just returned from the convenience store, where my daughter pressured me into getting three different candies for her (including those detestable Dots), even though I told her she could have only two. And now she’s doubly happy because her favorite joke just made WFTC.

Here’s her comment on all this:

    “Whooa, a talking blog!”

  2. My son says “AHH! A talking muffin!” as an exclamation of fear and surprise, which cracks me up. High concept stuff, Muffin 2 being shocked and afraid because a muffin is talking. We all know muffins can’t talk and we would be freaked out if one did. Except, of course, we’re not also talking muffins — if we were, we would expect muffins to talk and wouldn’t be shocked at all. Yet Muffin 2 is. Just brilliant.

  3. Maybe Muffin 2 is just not so self aware. Or maybe blind, like that skit from Chappelle Show where he plays the blind white supremist who doesn’t know he is black.

  4. lol My all-time favorite joke.
